When Is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro can be climbed every month of the year. But timing matters. Here is what you need to know before you book.

The Two Recommended Climbing Windows

The main dry season. Cold, clear skies, and excellent summit visibility. This is the most popular window on the mountain. Trails are busier and dates book out early. July, August, and September are the most reliable months for stable weather and the lowest precipitation.

The second dry season. Warmer than July to September, with fewer climbers on the trail. Summit visibility is good, and the mountain is less crowded. A strong alternative if you want better weather without peak-season crowds.

Low Season: April, May, and November
The rainy months are quieter. You will have more of the mountain to yourself. Rain typically falls in the afternoon, so morning hiking is usually possible. After snowfall, Kilimanjaro looks its most dramatic.
Low season is not recommended unless you have prior experience in wet alpine conditions and are comfortable with reduced summit visibility. Success rates are lower during the rainy months, and trail conditions deteriorate quickly.

Full Moon Summits
The summit push starts around midnight. On a full moon night, the glaciers are lit from above and the path is visible without a headlamp. Most climbers do not think to check the lunar calendar before booking. Those who do tend to say it was worth it.
